LA: close to hell

I am loving living in LA but let me tell you it is torture right now! its 90 degrees everyday and I feel sad every time I look at my fall wears...

I've figured out how to enjoy fall and live here at the same time, here is my guide:

Plaid mini:

Accessorize with care (and non fabric items):

Go for feathers instead of fur (which is excruciating!):

And last but not least, wear big bags, not big coats:

Good luck not leaving sweat marks!

a rare day

here at modern aesthetician we try not to re-post or just plain rip off the other blogs of the world but i have to do it today. this lady is A.M.A.Z.I.N.G. her blog is called the glamourai and it f-ing rocks!

her style is bangin'. she mixes couture with foreves 21 and vintage to make an outlandish inspiring look and i think she deserves our nod of approval, heck! maybe a head bang of approval... enjoy!

i have a column in vibe called mue-singz

although not the most comprehensive look (and certainly not unbiased and not exactly properly edited), i've been compiling pictures and mental notes from fall fashion week 09 (fyi dudes who read: this really means they are showing stuff for spring 09).

1. anne of green gables and eley kishimoto fall08 (see above image) as inspiration for marc jacobs. come on people, am i right or am i right??? the kitty is just because i love you.

(above L to R)
marc jacobs - eley kishimoto spring 08
marc by marc - eley kishimoto fall 08

2. patterned tights. looooooove. cannot wait to start wearing tights (and double tights): top shop, eley kishimoto

3. prints prints and more prints. simple prints, print comboz, and subtle comboz of the two. obviously this is a duh, especially coming from me: diane von furstenwhatever, marni, luella, temperley

4. color combos, etc. still loving this electric blue but also the softer sherbert colors (mmmmmm) mixed with greyscale: temperley, alexander wang, marc by marc, rodarte. PS i totally had a paul smith picture to post but the model's hair was so greasy and yuck - as were the rest of the models' hair in the show. the really wet look is kinda gross.

5. let's be honest. i'm for defs not gonna be walking around in rodarte heels or dvf dresses anytime soon. mostly because my fall fashion to-do list includes modifying my grandma's denim jumpsuit and trying to find shoes that actually fit. most wearable: marios schwab, charlotte ronson, jaeger london, alexander wang

that just happened.

Peter and I are back from Cali vaykay and I've never had a worse case of jetlag. UNBELIEVABLE!!! As we walked to the Promenade today, I realized that coming home this time registered the fact that we live in the city.

Regarding the image above, Liv has inspired me to make digi collage of my fall wishez and personal forecast. While putting it together I found my color and silhouette choices to be kinda predictable. Turquoise? No way. Um yeah, for now its a mix of classic / fem / equine / yummy knits, though not enough opaque tights. (rachel comey, bbw, alexander wang, heidi merrick) I've already started compiling images for another and will update when I don't have a million other things to do. And I've got some things to say about NYFW spring 09 shows. Most notably, MJ meets Anne of Green Gables.

Speaking of a million things, we are almost done setting up our print shop. Just need to jam out the exposure unit and we'll be good to go!

PS: While in Sonora, I totally scored my alexander wang coat from above: a tweed menswear-inspired overcoat. With bits of color in the weave and ubiquitous 80's cat claw leather accents on the shoulders.

request

We have had a request to lay out our top picks for men this fall since our blagh is too girl orientated... so here is what we think dudes should sport this fall:

1. Baggy hats (not to be confused with beanies!!!!!!)

2. Adorable layers with loose trimmings

you can be business but throw in the causal by loosening that tie and muss that hair... yum.

3. Minimal plaids

classic and will last season after season if you get a nice neutral plaid. investments!

4. Shoe boots (kick those converse! at least for a season...)

5. P.I. Chic

Give the rocker within a rest for a few months. You can find some really nice meeting worthy jeans that don't have poppy bullshit all over them everywhere. A nice coat, some serious shades that aren't neon? i think you'll thank me.

easy breesy be be weny

there will always be a soft spot in mah heart for built by wendy. it was around the time when i secretly subscribed to sassy (my mom despised it) that i found out about her guitar straps and dresses... you know, when i was 13. man, i wish i had held on to those issues.

the new fall line is the most sophisticated of her's yet, though still somewhat demure, wholesome, Midwest americana meets lederhosen vibe.

speaking of BBW, we went to hope's open studio last night. i love the gestural quality of her paintings and expanded color palette. her show at richard heller in LA opens on september 6th. (hope does illustration for BBW)

notes on proximity aka nerding out: a) i visited booklyn last winter, which is in the same building as her studio; b) wendy sold me a pattern once. she was much shorter than i expected. however, i always forget how tall i am.

thoughtsicles

I am so ready for summer and new spaces and projects and ideas. Big and BIGGER. We have collectively been super busy lately but here's a couple of shapes and patterns that I really like right now. Both from creatures of comfort - karen walker and rachel comey.

i won't get out of bed for less than 10k.

"Resort wear."

Left (one of my all time favez) and middle are Cavalli from a couple of years ago and the right is Gucci 08 (though it totally screams charlotte park avenue princess to me). Sometimes I feel like I'm the biggest fashion prude baby. Where is the Louis Vuitton? And Marni? Plus Missoni won't load. Guh. Fashion week is the ultimate for procrastinating. I'm exhausted by it yet can't stop looking. Oh, but I really love Vivienne Westwood's collection (ahem, houndstooth and digi patterns). Its quirky and weird and honest; one of the more wearable lines I've seen. House of Blaholland. I'll put that one out there just for his knits and sense of color. OK, I think I'm done and shall retire to thesis land for a bit.

Wait, Mr. Dior Coutureface?
I need a job.

slim aarons (i'm at the BEACH!)

I love his beach and resort photographs, they make me want to wear only navy blue and kelly green. And everything else. MIAMISPRINGBREAK!?! N/S and domino have used and published his stuff (n/s quite a bit) and there's a ton more here. A couple of my picks:

I'm looking at a bunch of "resort" wear, you know... Gucci, Cavalli, I'd totally wear to the beach. In my quest I found one of my favorite Cavalli dresses EVER, which I'll post later.

i heart working for i heart

so i've been interning (it sounds worse than it is, its like free business spying for fun) for jill at iheart. she is so cool, kinda my hero, creating a successful, creative thriving business with little help. she got an amazing eye for whats out there and searches out different price points for a wide variety of shoppers. she carries some of my favorite designers, eley kishimoto, lover.. and introduced me to some brand new ones like pam (perks and mini) which i spent all day fit modeling (jamming myself into a size too small, down right cute stuff) the fall line, what a job!

anyway, her on-line store should be up soon so i'll post that as asap as possible. i can't wait to open our glorious store. its going to be amazing!

hey, BABY... you are bizarre.

I'm on my second cup of coffee, clicking through fashion blergs on nymag. The Top 100 Fab looks, which readers poll in on, totally bore me though I'm not surprised. What's super neat is that you can browse various "details" which document some of the designer's accessories. But I'm not posting to give a running commentary / walking tour of the site. Olivia and I were just ijazzing after I sent her a detail photo of marc by marc bag:

I won't post any photos, you can see for yourselves.

Stargate.
Replicant.
Jackie O.

ruminate.

I've been looking forward to Eley Kishimoto's new line the most lately. They always do so much with color and pattern - lovelovelove. However, I have to say that this fall line is a little dissapointing, but maybs my hopes were a little too high. Some of my favez (and I'm thinking bottom left including hat for graduation):

more fall prints.

Tibi, Temperley

Matthew Williamson, Rebecca Taylor
(my favorite shows so far, along with tibi)

The Temperley dress on top reminds me of an elongated ikat version of this.
